The Rechargable Bow Thruster That Charges on 110V: What New Owners Need to Know

One of the most asked questions we get from people about the DOCKSTAR rechargable bow thruster is how to charge it. The answer is simpler than most expect.


The DOCKSTAR Smart Thruster

charges on standard 110V power — the same outlet available at nearly any marina, dock, garage, or even onboard the boat. No special connection. No dedicated marine electrical system. Just a two-prong charging cord, similar to a laptop charger, plugged into a regular wall outlet.


For boaters who have priced out traditional tunnel thruster systems and the marine electrician work that comes with them, that simplicity is a meaningful difference. A bow thruster that charges on 110V means charging at the slip, at home, or anywhere else a standard outlet exists.


A few things are worth knowing before that first charge.


It Ships Discharged and Why

If the thruster was shipped to you, it arrived at a low state of charge. That is intentional. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries carry a significant amount of energy, and shipping regulations and safe handling practices call for keeping that energy low during transport.


Boaters who pick up their thruster locally from our workshop here in beautiful Kingston, Washington, receive it fully charged and ready to install. For everyone else, the first step after unboxing is to plug it in.


The Charging Port and the Plug That Comes With It

The charging port on the DOCKSTAR Smart Thruster is unique and waterproof by design. A dedicated plug is included attached to the thruster specifically to keep that port protected when the thruster is not charging.


That plug matters more than it might seem. The charging port is the only external access point into the thruster's brain. It is how the charger communicates with the battery management system, and it is also how the thruster gets put into learning mode when reprogramming is needed.


Water or debris in the charging port can interfere with that communication and potentially trigger an unexpected response from the thruster. The port plug goes in any time the thruster is not actively charging to keep it free of dirt and debris. That is a habit worth building from day one.


Partial Charging Is Completely Fine

Some battery systems discourage partial charging. The DOCKSTAR thruster is not one of them.


The batteries have no memory effect. Charging from 60% to 80% and then unplugging does not affect the battery's ability to reach full charge on the next cycle. The thruster can be unplugged at any point during charging without causing harm.


If there is time for a full charge, great. If not, whatever charge is available before heading out is fine. Tom recommends keeping the battery above 50% for normal docking use — enough charge to handle a full arrival and departure without running low at the wrong moment.


The thruster can even operate while it is still plugged in and charging, if the situation calls for it.


What a Full Charge Cycle Looks Like

Plugging the thruster into a standard 110V outlet overnight covers everything. The charger handles the full sequence automatically.


It charges through the standard phases, then enters a balancing cycle at the end where it equalizes the charge across all the individual battery cells. That balancing phase protects long-term battery health. When it is complete, the light goes solid for up to two hours and then the thruster shuts itself off.


No monitoring required. Plug it in before bed and it is ready in the morning.


Once a Year, Let It Run All the Way Down

For long-term battery health, We recommend running the thruster to full exhaustion once a year, letting it discharge completely, then running a full charge cycle through to balancing.


That one habit, done at the start or end of the boating season, helps keep the cells in balance and extends the overall lifespan of the battery. Combined with regular use throughout the season, it is the simplest thing an owner can do to protect the investment.
